We Live in Dangerous Times
It is getting crowded behind every tree. The shadows are packed with terrorists, others conspiring to be a terrorist, and all sorts of those spying on the bad guys as well as the good guys. No one seems to be realizing how dangerous this could get and how quickly the change could take place.
1. We have major long term global competitiveness issues and no one is focusing on the route causes and the necessary fixes. To understand this you need only look at General Motors that began its slide in the 1960’s from the World’s most successful car company and is still sliding (and no longer number one). You create wealth by mining, farming, or manufacture. You might “secure/steal” wealth by providing services but sooner or later you are at risk that someone else will do that better too. This is important because the future is what we are preparing for children and grandchildren.
2. There are very serious social and infra structure issues facing us domestically.
- Health care that is affordable and is available with dignity
- Social security as a safety net as promised
- Roads, bridges, and other public services
- Significant reductions in demand for fossil fuels as well as generation of green house gases
- A shrinking of the widening gap between the rich and the poor
- A national dialogue that allows all voice to speak and to understand the opposing views
- A consensus that discussing issues and seeking the center is a safe position.
3. Bush and Cheney are stalking Iran with rhetoric designed to marshal public support. This is dangerous since it could lead to expanding our military commitment in the Middle East and it detracts from the necessary attention on changing our policies in Iraq.
4. Both political parties have morphed to organizations requiring vast amounts of money to run for and remain in office. Most of the money goes for “thinkers (policy makers)” and for transportation/fund raising. This dreadful amount of money is making our elected leaders no longer responsible to the people but hopelessly trapped by the whims of their large donors.
5. None of the major 2008 Presidential Candidates has recognized this risk in any major speech. This includes the Republicans who are trying to dress in the clothing of fear as well as the Democrats who might act differently but want to appear tough for fear of giving an advantage to the Republicans. What has been missing for the past 7 years has been common sense and respect for others.
It would appear that the Democrats should win the White House and increase their numbers in both the House and the Senate in November 2008.
1. It will be tempting for Bush/Cheney to start a war with Iran before the election as a means to confuse the voters and through fear, keep them voting red.
2. In the event there is no escalation of military action, the likely future Democratic President will be handed a mess. Everything from domestic spying to extreme interrogation to the quagmire of Iraq. Will the Democratic leader have both the wisdom and the guts to enact policies to correct this mess or will the new leader simply make decisions based upon the 2012 election ?
