If I Were Hillary

If I were Hillary and wanted to become President, there a five promises I would make over and above the standard, I will keep America strong and secure.  The five are:

1. I will close Guantanamo detention facility as soon as is possible following January 20, 2009 and immediately suspend all military tribunals.  Any prisoners deemed a current threat to America would be transfered to American detention centers and provided a speedy trial according to our laws.

2. I will support immediate negotiations with the rest of the developed nations, including India and China, on a successor agreement to the Kyoto Protocol and will support numeric targets for green house gas reductions.

3. I will enter negotiation with Mexico with the goal of agreeing on a yearly number of Mexicans that can seek work in the US.  I will back up the US position with sufficient Mexican based administrative centers necessary to issue identity cards and work/student/tourist visas in a timely manner.  With an acceptable agreement from the Mexican Government (reciprocal arrangements, help on drug smuggling, assistance on those who do not use the ID’s), I will open a process for the current undocumented Mexicans living in the US.  They could either return to Mexico and apply for ID or, if willing, come forward to US based administrative centers for a 5 year visa.

My position will be that Mexicans are here either to work (or study) temporarily (5 year continuous stay, renewable following a 1 year absence) or to become US citizens.

4. I will immediately order all spying on US citizens to cease and allow it in the future only with court approval (60 days after the fact if necessary).  I will reaffirm our Country’s affirmation of the Geneva Convention, due process, and habeas corpus.

5. I will affirm the objective of universal health care for all Americans and will work with Congress to enact legislation that reduces the number of uninsured, improves the efficiency of the current system, and provides a step by step path to total universal coverage.  I will champion both a private and Government run system.

There are certainly more goals and objectives but these can be used to separate Hillary from George W Bush and for that matter the rest of the pack.  I would really like Hillary to declare she will be transparent and straight forward in the future, and if she makes a mistake, she will admit it.  Unfortunately it is probably too late in life for that.  I am ready to accept Hillary with these declarations and the knowledge that she is a woman that (1) the US really needs symbollically as the commander in chief, and (2) that she could not be as bad for the country as George W Bush.
