Israel and Albania
Things are pretty quiet at the White House these days. Requests for President George W Bush’s personal appearance has dwindled to a few elementary and pre-K schools. His approval rating are approaching asymptotically single digits. The White House Press corps is especially quiet because there is nothing bright to point to. But when it comes to little Albania and Americas 52nd State (Great Britian is the 51st), Israel, there is nothing but kind words and praise for Bush. How could everyone else have it so wrong and these two countries have it so right?
Albania has felt favorably about the US since Woodrow Wilson’s days in office and Bush has inherited this respect. Israel has had a free ride for Bush’s 8 years and has never during his Administration had to act responsibly and make tough political choices that would lead to peace. For Israel’s leaders, Bush (and his boss, Dick Cheney) have been the “play doh” type of American leaders they have been looking for. For Bush, both Countries provide him a warm spot light, photo ops, and a big fancy dinner. These are just the things little George likes.
It will be for the historians to try and explain why Bush has wasted 8 years in the search for Palestinian-Israeli peace. To be sure the peace will only come when the two sides actually agree to terms but with the US openly supporting only one side and isolating the other, compromise and agreements are unlikely.
In a suit, I must admit, George looks good, even Presidential. In real life, however, he is a walking billboard advertising that he is neither a leader nor an executive. He inspires few and abdicates to too many. He has little or no demonstated management skills other than smiling. Should the day come when he is not judged the Country’s least capable President, it is difficult to imagine a free, democratic, and progressive Country flying the red, white, and blue.
