False Prophets

The misguided and the disingenuous are all over the news media speaking with the sincerity that we were used to seeing with ace chicken hawk, Dick Cheney. Senators Bluster and Fluster are speaking out daily with words like “dead on arrival”, or “I can not support that provision”. And from the side lines are special interests who see a chance to advance their personal beliefs on the backs of the poor and uninsured. This behavior is something to be proud of.

In truth, all these false prophets have an agenda, and it is not health care reform that they are trying to advance. Insurance money is greasing many of these self righteous prophets through promises of very generous campaign contributions. It should be clear that Republicans would prefer to see any health care legislation defeated in order to enhance their Party’s chances in 2010. As evidence of this, Republicans have proposed buying insurance across State lines and a cap on malpractice claims. These measures, even if fully successful, would be a drop in the bucket. US per capita health care cost is almost two times any other country.

Democrats are not perfect either. The so called “Blue Dogs” have not tried to tell their constituents why the US health care delivery system should be changed, and why it would be good for them. Many of these Democrats are too worried about their next election. That speaks volumes about their real focus.

The Catholic Bishops are speaking out about an obscure provision that neither endorses nor denies health care coverage for abortions. This shameful behavior puts at risk health care coverage for millions who now go without. Senator Joe Lieberman, who never saw a pro-Israel bill he didn’t like, flusters that he could not possible support a bill that contained a “public option”. Why would that be?

These are very interesting times. It is now that one can see more clearly those who are genuine in their concern for other Americans, or better said, other human beings. Remember those who have tried to improve the fairness of health care as well as it cost and effectiveness. For the rest, vote with your feet.
