In the business world, as in many sports, many organizations look for the “big play” person. The business or sports hero is the person, who with the team in danger of losing, steps in and does some fantastic act that brings victory where otherwise defeat was certain. Is President Obama our next “home run hitter” or “touchdown passer” or “ three point basket maker”?

It is now November and the pundits are looking for accomplishments. The 24/7 “news readers” say they are having a hard time finding examples of true accomplishments. Republicans have pounced upon this and are saying, “see we told you so”. Democrats, on the defensive, blurt out that the Country was so screwed up when Obama took over, it has taken a long time just to get in a position to bring change. This may be true but it not convincing.

A far better answer to the question of what has President Obama accomplished is, “one can’t tell yet”. Just as the answer to an economist’s question, “how much did those shoes you are wearing cost?”  The answer is, “I don’t know, I am not done wearing them”.   Some questions simply need more time before judgement can be made.

The President has overturned a large number of mistaken policies and has, with great pains, set the American Ship of State on a course of greater transparency, respect of human rights, and inclusion (especially with foreign nations). These are all decisions with no immediate payoffs. These steps could still end up with no positive results.   But, look only for a moment what America got from the Bush Administration’s quick, decisive decisions. We got tricked into Iraq, we got Abu Ghraib, and we saw a near return to the cold war in relations with Russia.

The course President Obama seems to be following is a politically traitorous course. Everyone likes the home run hitter and forgets all the times that player struck out. The best teams, however, win with a balanced, skilled, and diligently working team.  We will see.
